Ink

Chikako painting a large sumi ink piece of a bird and reeds on a wall-mounted sheet of paper

I first encountered sumi ink as an elementary school student in Japan through calligraphy classes.

Many years later, after moving to Canada, I found my way back to ink. Seeing Japanese culture from a distance allowed me to rediscover it with fresh eyes.

Ink taught me the beauty of simplicity — the beauty that emerges when everything unnecessary is stripped away. The scent of the ink, the flow of water, and the unexpected marks created through each brushstroke exist only in that single moment.

This quiet practice became more than an artistic process; it transformed the way I see and live my life.

In January 2026, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, I returned to Japan to research the traditions and philosophy of sumi ink.

Bringing those experiences back to Canada, I continue to explore ink through the perspective of the place I now call home. While honoring the traditions from which it comes, I seek to create work that reflects my own journey between cultures.
